Harwinton- Virginia A. Kandefer, 85, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her home. She was the beloved wife of the late John J. Kandefer.
Mrs. Kandefer was born in Torrington on December 10, 1935, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Gozemba) Bergelewicz, and had been a lifelong area resident. She was a retired employee of the Procurement Office of the Department of the Army, retiring with 35 years of service. Mrs. Kandefer was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church of Our Lady of Hope Parish, Harwinton, and a former communicant for many years of St. Mary’s Church, Torrington. She was a member of the Children of Mary, enjoyed sewing, gardening, and loved to crochet.
Survivors include a sister, Joan Ziemann and her husband, Richard, of Chester: Aunts, Helen and Phyllis Gozemba of Torrington. Nieces and Nephews: Adam and Judy Kandefer, Jeanette and Ken Muller, MaryAnn Semrau, Eric Ziemann, Kurt Ziemann, and Jeremy Ziemann and his wife, Kerry Digby: two grandnieces, Ava and Liv and grandnephew Evan.
Virginia was able to continue her late life in her home with the loving efforts of her extended family in Torrington and her dear neighbors in Harwinton. She had great joy in the loving friendships of neighbors John and Simone Hull. She enjoyed her many hang-out nights at home with Anthony and Rachael Placentino and her title as “Miss Ginny”. She thoroughly enjoyed the role of surrogate grandma to Anthony and Rylee Placentino.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 22, 2021, at 11:15a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 78 Litchfield Rd., Harwinton, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00p.m. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Thursday morning from 10:15 to 11:15a.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
