Joan F (Peters) Hubbard

Torrington- Joan Frances (Peters) Hubbard, 79, passed away June 25, 2026, after a debilitating six months in the hospital and rehab.

Joan was an RN for over 50 years and truly loved her job. She made many friends over the years, from co-workers to clients. She never would have traded her profession as she loved helping others. She worked at Extend-a-Care, Adams House, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, and for the Connecticut DDS. She was especially fond of working at DDS, where she developed friendships with Lois, Linda P., and Linda C., and so many others.

Joan had what others would think was a tough life, but she always pulled through. When Joan was 5, her dad fell out of an ambulance while on duty and suffered brain damage. Her mom had cancer and died when Joan was just 16. She had to sign her own report cards without her parents. She had one older sister, Mary Catherine. Mary was in College but would bring Joan food. Joan lived on eggs for two years, as she would often reminisce. Joan graduated high school and got a scholarship for nursing at Meriden Hospital, becoming an RN.

She met her future husband, Richard, when she was 14. She lied about her age at the time, as Richard was close to 18. They dated for 7 years and finally got married. When they divorced in 1987, they remained close friends, and Joan became friends with Richard’s second wife, Lorrie. There was no bad blood.

Joan had two kids, Anne was older, followed by Richard Jr. She was also close to her nephew, Douglas Leichner, having babysat him many days over the years. Sadly, Anne developed anorexia nervosa. For 20 years, although there were many good times, Joan would stress a lot on how to get Anne some help. Sadly, Anne passed away at age 42, devastating her parents and brother.

Joan had made amazing accomplishments that not many people can do. With her son’s guidance, she reversed her diabetes and hypertension by adopting a plant based diet. She was so happy to be free of those ailments and had a good quality of life until she got sick in January. Joan became an ethical vegan in the process, a good fit since she loved animals. Aside from her career and family, she was extremely proud of her lifestyle changes in 2020, as health was important to her. 

Her family and friends will miss her smile. We wish to thank Luna Brook and Brighton Hospice for all of the care provided to Joan.

Memorial services will be held in the next few months, details will be announced.
