Torrington- Carmela Bushey, 98, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2020 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard J. Bushey, Sr.
Mrs. Bushey was born in Torrington on December 12, 1921, daughter of the late Pietro and Michelina (DeMarco) Vergaro, and had been a lifelong city resident. Carmela was totally independent until she was 95, doing her own grocery shopping, going to the Sullivan Senior Center three times a week, and getting her hair done every Friday. She was extremely strong willed, fashionable woman, with a quiet courage, as she had limited eyesight. Carmela loved to attend birthday parties, picnics, and holiday get-togethers with her extensive family.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the caregivers from Northwest Homecare, and special thanks to Ceil Alfano for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Carmela over the last several years.
Survivors include a son, Richard J. Bushey, Jr.; a daughter, Barbara Zaharek and her husband Stephen, all of Torrington; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Bushey, Richard Bushey, III. (Tracy), Brandy Blische (Duane), Jerimiah Bushey (Heather), Dawn, Deanna, James, and Mark Sanderson, Darryl Rinaldi (Terry), and William Rinaldi (Melissa); 20 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bushey was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Rinaldi; two brothers, Ricardo and Ferdinand Vergaro; and a sister, Olivia Gogolya.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 26, 2020 at 11:00a.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sullivan Senior Center, 88 E. Albert St., Torrington, CT 06790.
