William T. Murphy, Jr.

Torrington- William T. Murphy, Jr., 89, died Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Hartford Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Beverlee (Marvin) Murphy.

        Mr. Murphy was born in Torrington on January 20, 1928, son of the late William T. Murphy, Sr., and Alice Mae Elizabeth (Kaenel) Murphy, and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, and had served in the Medical Corps. Mr. Murphy was a retired pharmacist and was the owner of Murphy Pharmacy in Torrington. He had been employed by the Connecticut Valley Hospital, Norfolk Pharmacy, Rite Aid Pharmacy, and Murphy Pharmacy, Litchfield. Mr. Murphy was very devout to his Catholic faith, a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, where he had served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, contributing to country fairs, and was a member of the Litchfield Hills Historical Automobile Club. He was a former member of the Torrington Lodge of Elks and Litchfield Grange.

        Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Hanson Murphy and her husband Mark Heinitz of Springfield, VA, and Christine Marie Maltais and her husband John Robert Maltais of Springfield, MA; a brother, John E. Murphy of Litchfield; three grandchildren, Natalie and Michelle Heinitz, and Marisa Maltais; a niece; and four nephews. Mr. Murphy was predeceased by a brother, Joseph E. Murphy.

        We thank all people who made our dad’s life better.

        Funeral services will be held Friday, February 3, 2017 at 10:00a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 160 Main St., Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00a.m.. Burial will follow in St. Anthony of Padua Cemetery, Litchfield. Friends may call Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
