Eeltje "Elly" Hubregtse Obituary

Torrington- Eeltje “Elly” Hubregtse passed away on August 24, 2018.  She was born in Pekalongan, Java, Indonesia on January 7, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Col. H.J. Hubregtse and his wife Yskje Feenstra Hubregtse.

Elly leaves behind a brother, Drs. Tjebbe Hubregtse and his family in the Netherlands, and a sister, Johanna Cornelia van Nuss(Co) and her family in South Africa.

At a young age, she returned to the Netherlands, where she received her primary and secondary education. In 1945, she graduated from the Christian Lyceum in Bussum in the Netherlands.  She obtained her diploma from the Netherlands Chemical Society as a chemist and medical technologist.

In 1952, Elly joined the Nurse Corps of the Royal Dutch Army (N.V.K.L.) and after the post-war dissolution of the Corps, she received an honorary discharge as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1954, Elly left for the U.S.A. on a student visa, and returned as an immigrant in 1966.  She obtained her license as a medical technologist from the American Society of Clinical Pathology and her Master of Health Science degree, majoring in medical microbiology, from Quinnipiac University.

Elly was employed by the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for 40 years. Elly attended the cultural exchange program at the Winsted Technical Community College, and enjoyed foreign travel excursions.  Elly was a former member of the Torrington Woman’s Club and the Sullivan Senior Center.

Elly was a member of the United Congregational Church in Torrington for more than 30 years and served on many committees. She often served at the Torrington Soup Kitchen with other members of her church.

After a medical setback in 2010, Elly was blessed with kindness and visits from friends and family, especially her sister who, with her daughter Renee, traveled from South Africa to visit her in Torrington.  Special thanks to her friend Robin Ann Krasinski for her friendship during the first difficult year, and members of the United Congregational Church.

Special thanks to Dr. Dennis Gottfried for his professional care and to her former caregiver, April Hart. Special thanks to the staff at Brandywine Assisted Living in Litchfield for their devoted care and to the management at Brandywine for going above and beyond for Elly. Elly’s family is especially grateful to Darrin Newbury for his unwavering support over the years.
