Bernie Smith

Barkhamsted- Bernie Smith, 77, passed away March 4, 2024, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington.

        Bernie was born in Norwalk on September 28, 1946, daughter of the late Wellesley and Jean (Aaron) Smith. 

        Anyone who knew her knew what a spunky, sassy, spitfire she was.  She had a great sense of humor and loved to joke with her friends.  She particularly loved to blurt out some fresh and unlady-like words just to get people's reactions.  She was always dressed to impress with bows in her hair, necklaces around her neck and numerous bracelets on both arms.

        Bernie made sure that everyone knew she loved them when she declared, "I love ya!!"  She loved to tease people by telling them they wore a girdle.  No one is really sure where that came from or why it was so funny to her but when she said it, she would crack up which would in turn make everyone laugh!  She was a good sport when asked if she was wearing a girdle or if we said we borrowed one of hers.  Bernie was always on a mission to find someone to "scratch my back".  No matter how long you scratched it, she always wanted more!!  If you asked her for a back scratch in return you could be sure you got the cheapest and quickest back scratch known to man!!

        She loved her housemates and staff dearly and they all loved her as well.  Her Old North Road family was truly that, a FAMILY!  She also had a very special relationship with her boyfriend Danny for well over 25 years.

        Rest in peace sweet Bernie.  You were loved by so many and will be dearly missed.  Go find Elvis and tell him how much you love him (just remember to wear your girdle) and he may give you a good back scratch too!!  Now he can sing you your favorite song:

        Memorial services will be held Monday, March 18, 2024 at 5:00p.m. Friends may call Monday from 4:00 to 6:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington.
