Torrington- Nicholas Zappone, 81, died Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Valerie Manor, Torrington. He was the beloved husband of 50 years of the late Carol M. (Galgano) Zappone.
Mr. Zappone was born in Cercemaggiore, Campobasso, Abruzzi, Italy, on December 21, 1934, son of the late Francesco and Angelina (LaPorta) Zappone, and had been a city resident since 1954. Nicholas was a retired produce buyer for Allied Grocers, retiring in 1992 with 38 years of service. After his retirement, he then worked for Fowler and Huntting Produce in Hartford. Mr. Zappone was a communicant of St. Peter Church, a founding member of the Cercemaggiore Community Club in Watertown, and was an avid bowler on the Senior Mixed and Men’s Leagues at the former Skytop Lanes. Mr. Zappone enjoyed gardening, winemaking, tinkering, and hunting. In his younger years he was best known for his dancing skills. He will always be remembered for playing the folksongs passed down from his father on the concertina at family parties and other events.
Survivors include a son, Frank D. Zappone and his wife Patricia of Prospect, a daughter, Margaret “Margie” Languell and her husband Joseph of Torrington, a brother-in-law, Nicholas Galgano and his wife Mary, five grandchildren, Miranda Boden and her husband Brenden, Amorette Languell, Nicholas W. Zappone and his fiancee Nicole, Iassic Languell and his fiancee Lisa, and Bartholomew Languell and his fiancee Bekah, several nieces and nephews, and his dear friend and constant companion, Joan Rinaldi of Bantam. Mr. Zappone was predeceased by three sisters, Catherine Zappone, Jean Fornito, and Mary Santos.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 9, 2016 at 9:30a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, to St. Peter Church, 107 E. Main St., Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Thursday, September 8, 2016 from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
