Emerson J. Smitley

Torrington- Emerson J. Smitley, 93, died Monday, September 26, 2016 at Hartford Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Sigrid H. (Brandt) Smitley.

        Mr. Smitley was born in Southwest, PA, on October 18, 1922, son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Elko) Smitley, and had been a Torrington resident for over 70 years. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, and ice fishing.

        Survivors include a son, Mark Smitley, a daughter, Susan Smitley and her husband Kip Rogers, all of Torrington, two stepsons; Phillip Balsamo and his wife Denise of Hollis, NH, and Eric Balsamo and his wife Helen of Torrington, a stepdaughter, Theresa Franconi and her husband Robert of New Hartford, ten grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Smitley was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Ann Ressel.

        Graveside services with full military honors will be held Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10:30a.m. at Winchester Center Cemetery, South Rd., Winchester.
