Torrington- Charles P. Chretien, 86, died Thursday, March 9, 2017 in his home. He was the beloved husband of Julia (Schunko) Chretien.

        Mr. Chretien was born in Pittsfield, MA on June 8, 1930, son of the late Joseph and Isabelle (Brassor) Chretien, and had been an area resident for many years. He was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict Veteran and had been awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Chretien was a retired Administrator with the Torrington School System. He had taught at both South and Wetmore Schools, and served as Principal of Vogel School from 1972-80. In 1980, Mr. Chretien returned to teaching 8th grade at Vogel School, and was awarded the Educator of the Year Award in 1985. He retired from the School System in 1990. Mr. Chretien was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Torrington, and St. Joseph’s Church, Canaan. Mr. Chretien was a member of the Knights of Columbus Unity Council 37, and served as Grand Knight in 1968. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA and a past President of LARC.

        Survivors, in addition to his wife Julia, include three sons, William P. Chretien and his wife Sandra of Keene, NH, Geoffrey P. Chretien and his wife Mariann of Torrington, and Paul P. Chretien and his partner Sam Gustian of Lawrenceville, GA; a daughter, Christina M. Brzoska and her husband Joseph of Torrington; a brother, Richard Chretien of Pittsfield, MA; five grandchildren, Christopher Brzoska and his wife Jody, Deirdre Chretien and her husband Domenic Perkins, Sarah Mosher and her husband Nicholas, Robert Chretien, and Nina McIntyre and her husband Joe; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

        Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 160 Main St., Torrington. Full Military Honors will be accorded following the Mass. Burial will be private. Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, is in care of arrangements.

        At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNS Hospice, 65 Commercial Blvd, Torrington, CT 06790.
