Torrington- Adolph “Gassy” Yurgalewicz, 96, passed away Friday, September 8, 2017. He was the beloved husband of the late Frances (Juhas) Yurgalewicz, who predeceased him on February 23, 2008.

        Mr. Yurgalewicz was born in Torrington on October 28, 1920, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Chaplin) Yurgalewicz and served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a Technician Third Grade in the 814th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron. He received an Honorable Discharge on 12/6/45. Mr. Yurgalewicz was a retired Inspection Supervisor at the Torrington Company Standard Plant, retiring with 45 years of service.

        He was a member of the Harwinton VFW, under the command of his brother-in-law, Silvio “Sy” Florio, a member of the Polish National Alliance, and a member of The Order Sons of Italy. Mr. Yurgalewicz enjoyed all sports, especially softball, basketball, golf, fishing, hunting, and hiking. He was always at the center of his children’s activities, offering his expertise for instruction and umpiring games with the neighborhood kids as well. There was always a game or activity going on. His hobbies included taking care of his family and home, polish music, dances, and family picnics. He truly loved the outdoors, chopping wood, gardening, and making friends with the chipmunks in the yard. He was a jack of all trades, and master of them all.

        Survivors include three daughters, Frances and her husband Harry Victor Penn of FL, Janet and her husband Thomas Whittaker of Torrington, and Lois and her husband Joseph Kuszaj, Jr., of CA; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Yurgalewicz was predeceased by three brothers, Anthony, Walter, and Henry; three sisters, Josephine Marchell, Evelyn Ferency, and Mary Ann “Minnie” Florio.

        Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 9:30a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, to Sacred Heart Church, 116 Grove St., Torrington for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Monday, September 11, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.

        At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241 or to the Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.
