Cremation Options

Here in Northwest Connecticut earth burial, entombment in a mausoleum, or cremation are the three most common methods for the final disposition of a human body. Regardless of the choice you make for final disposition, usually there is some ritual or formality leading up to, or immediately after, the final disposition.

For those who choose cremation as their preferred means of final disposition we present here some choices you have as to funeral or memorial services before or after the cremation. Any service could be private or public.

• A funeral is conducted before cremation with the body present for the ceremony.
  
• A memorial service is held after the cremation and the body is not present. The ashes may, or, may not, be present for the memorial service. This is a choice you make.

1. Traditional Funeral Service

A formal funeral before cremation with a viewing and wake any time prior to the funeral.

2. Contemporary Funeral Service

A formal funeral held at your church with the body present prior to a cremation. No embalming or viewing and usually without calling hours.

3. Memorial Service

A formal service arranged and directed at your church without the body present.

4. Graveside Committal Service

A formal gathering at the cemetery where the urn is to be buried with clergy present for final prayers.

5. Direct Cremation

For those who want the minimum professional involvement by the staff of Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home. No service beyond that necessary to transport the body to the crematory.
